Time for Phil and Conner’s trip, Phil had done a bit of pleasure angling whilst Conner was just getting into his carp fishing so what would they make of it here On The Ebro?????
Arriving late Saturday I set them up down the garden, the river was flowing with 2 doors of the dam here in Flix open, cold snow melt was going to slow the action down but I was confident of a few bites. Late evening and Conner was off the mark with a lovely 16lb common so with 1 in the bag its was off to the local steak house!!!!! Day 2 and with the river still flowing we fished the garden again. Not ideal but between the trees in the slack water there are always a few fish so with maize and the ever faithful pineapple boilies we squeezed 2 rods in. Phil got off the mark with a high double and Conner chipped in with another 16lb common but that was it and a trip to Mequinenza awaited us in the morning. Truck loaded off we went first thing and we headed for a swim I just love. For me it’s got everything open water margins and trees with proper banks!!!!!! Unlike much of the Town Stretch here. What with cold water flowing I decided that it’s best to target the carp first, with all 6 rods on pineapple snowmen, so with rods out ovals up and kettle on!!!!! time to sit back and enjoy the scenery. First action came to Conner as his right hand rod rattled off, steady fight resulting in a cracking common and a good one at 27lb 7oz and a new PB……good start.
New PB for Conner 27lb 7oz
That passed without anything else, as did the day so with the evening drawing in we made sure all the rods were on the spots see what the hours of darkness bring. That night I landed a 22lb common and Conner a 17 ….it should have been Phils turn but he’s a deep sleeper and hard to wake up!!!! Windy cold evenings were taking its toll on Phil, I’m sure when you think about fishing in Spain you expect Sunshine and fish galore!! this is the Ebro !!! but early Spring and the snow melt meant we were going to have to work hard if we were to achieve goals!!!! The mornings were calm and the sun shone…..well on the far bank it did we were in the shade!!!!! To give Phil a break from the river bank and with the egar Conner happy to stay fishing I took Phil off for a shower and a round of golf. All clean and refreshed we set off to the local coarse. Second hole and it’s starting to rain well sleet really!!!!! We almost run round the coarse cold and soaked through back home to dry off and collect the cat rods as they really wanted a go after the moggies. With 4 doors of the dam in Flix now open making fishing here impossible we headed back up to Mequinenza, we put 2 carp rods out and 4 cat rods out on pellets……the waiting game began….. That night the cat rods stayed quite but we managed a good carp through the night Conner was on it and another PB at 31lb 8oz, morning came and one of the carp rods were away again…..Conner onto it, (Phil trouble getting up again)!! Better fight this, it snagged us up for a bit then line caught in the bamboo with a good fish wallowing!!!! but all came good as we netted a cracker and another new PB for Conner.
Conner 31lb 8oz
Phil 33lb
The next 2 days went with just 3 more carp landed and 2 good fish lost to a snag, ohh and the obligatory 2lb 2oz roach!!!! We ended a tough trip with no cats but 10 good fish and 4 new pb’s. This trip was another example of its not always easy here, for me this makes it all the more exciting but also understand people’s ideas of coming to Spain and the Ebro catching loads of fish whilst sunbathing, drinking beer enjoying a good nights sleep and breakfast on the balcony …..yes it does happen but had we not stayed out all week this trip would have ended in just a few double figure carp. So “hats off” to both Phil and Conner who stayed with it till the end and went home exhausted but with a few good carp in the bag.
until next time Paul
