The River Ebro is 900km in length, it starts from the Pyrenees Mountains and meanders it’s way though Spain and Catalunya where it empties into the Mediterranean at the Delta near the town of Amposta. There are 3 dams on the river greatly changing the characteristics of the river giving many different environments in which to fish. Above the first dam is the Town of Caspe, here the river is vast and so called the Mar de Aragon (Sea of Aragon).
For those who have never fished the Ebro before tactics are quite simple. For the cats due to differing local rules regarding live baiting we fish pellet style, simple hair rigged Halibut pellets fished over a big bed of free offerings is a very effective method, multiple catches can be achieved on the right day. Carp fishing is no different, halibut pellets, boilies and particles all working well, keeping it simple but strong is the key.
Below this dam you have the Town Mequinenza, the 2nd dam at Ribaroja de Ebre and the 3rd here in Flix. It is here that I concentrate most of our fishing. Below the dam in Flix at the Town stretch the river is narrow and almost pond like, slow steady current making for comfortable fishing plenty of carp around the 20lb mark to be found here but also specimens to over 40lbs and cats to over 150lbs!
Above the dam in Flix is the “factory” stretch where 24hr fishing is legal!!!! This 2km stretch of river has few swims so you are fishing away from the crowds and also has the beautiful Sebes Nature Reserve with its White Storks and Marsh Harriers as a back drop. The river here drops down to near 30 feet straight off the bank, this makes for easy fishing, no need for inflatable boats here we fish straight from the bank. Big Carp and Cats are present here the cats go to over 200lbs now and carp being caught well into the 50’s what with 24hr fishing this really is a great stretch to catch that dream fish.
We offer excursions to Ribaroja and Mequinenza, Ribaroja is a great venue for fishing for some of the huge roach which reside in the Ebro, Mequinenza the most well know and popular Town, here the cats and carp have grown to huge sizes. With these spots as well as the great fishing in and around Flix we at On The Ebro give you the opportunity to fish tried and tested swims to maximise your chances of catching no matter what time of year or river conditions.
The fishing here in Flix is superb, match it with the scenery, weather and accommodation you have the total holiday.
We are based in the Town of Flix where the fabulous River Ebro famous for its huge Wels Catfish and Carp passes both sides of the village via the Meander.
