After a week off and the weather starting to cool down I wasn’t sure what to expect, for Martin and Robert it was their 3rd trip here but 3 years had past since their last.
First day passed in the garden with Robert going 4 nil up on Dad with some nice carp and cats to 30lb but they were looking forward to visiting the 24hr stretch and doing a night or two.
Monday morning and off we went, camp set up rods out all good perfect flat calm conditions but with little bait being put in how long would we have to wait for a bite. Well not too long with Martin landing a 30lb cat followed by a carp, night falls so early now so it wasn’t long before head torches were needed and Roberts turn on the rods.
Rod away and Robert was into a decent fish PB was 35lb so could this be bigger, yes it could as we soon had it on the bank and the scales went round to 54lb great new PB for Robert. Night passed with a couple of carp and as the sun came up rods recast it was Roberts turn on the rods again.
Rod away and again Robert was into a good fish, another good scrap and another PB as this one went 60lb Robert showing Dad how it is done!!
Day passes slowly but with a couple in the bag confidence was high, late afternoon and Martin was in and this was what we had been waiting for.
Reel absolutely screaming and Martin looking a bit worried as this fish was not happy! Towel in position and time to enjoy the fight the fish this year have not disappointed in this department and 10 minutes later we have it on the bank. Good fish and the Fig Tree still producing as the fish went 80lb, One happy Dad.
With some good fish in the bag the lads went off to have a shower (not sure Robert actually got in it!!) but whilst they were away I had control of the carp rods. Well the inevitable happened and soon after they left one of the rods was away good fight resulting in a nice common for me 28lb.
Afternoon passed quietly I changed a couple of the rods to spod rods, reason being too fish slightly lighter, smaller hook 2 pellets but normal main line and hook link. Nothing happened as evening came but about 10 30pm one of the spod rods is screaming. Robert onto it like a flash bent into a good fish. First minute of the fight not much happened but then it realised it was hooked!!! Well i’ve commented nearly ever decent fish we have caught this year of nearly being spooled out but this was something else!!!! Poor Robert towel in place spod rod bent over and the reel make some very funny noises. 200 yards gone with just one run. A bit if adjustment to the drag and Robert turned it, we did say to him before if you need to pass the rod over do so but no chance!! 15 mins later and the reel looked a bit healthier with some line on it! and after a bit of a struggle under the rod tip up she came, very long fish could Robert have beaten James 138lb cat?? Well we curled it up in the sling and the scales went round to 126lb and Robert had just doubled his PB for a second time, amazing fight great effort from Robert.
That was the last fish from the Fig tree the last two days we fished at the garden producing some small carp and a 35lb cat to Martin.
Great session with the weather turning with very cold mornings I wasn’t sure if the cats would be feeding but with a bit of effort we managed to keep the season going well into November.
Well done Martin and Robert and well done Fig Tree.
